Жил в старом семейном особняке в Глочестере, штат Вирджиния, когда-то принадлежавшем, по словам Л., первому человеку, повешенному в Вирджинии.
Жена - Мэри Л. Мандола (Mary L. Mandola) (9 августа 1921 ). Четверо дочерей.
Лауреат премии "Хьюго" (1956).
Произведения Л. переведены на болгарский, венгерский, монгольский, немецкий, польский, сербско-хорватский, словацкий, французский, чешский, японский.
